HR, Recruitment & Retention

The Crew Academy’s GUEST-accredited HR, Recruitment & Retention course is designed to enhance the student’s knowledge of superyacht crew management.

In this course, you'll learn about Maritime Conventions, Health & Safety, Security Policies, and the importance of following Yacht Standing Orders and an Ethical Code of Conduct. We'll cover crew contracts in line with Maritime Labour Convention standards, and the process for ensuring crew qualifications and certifications.

The course also teaches you how to attract, recruit, nurture, and retain the best talent. This includes practical guidance on creating job descriptions, effective interviewing techniques for hiring, and induction processes for new crew members.

You'll also learn about fostering positive employee relationships, performance management, identifying training opportunities, and how to manage and commit to crew wellbeing.

By the end, you will be equipped to manage your crew with an emphasis on professionalism, compliance, safety, and support, promoting a well-run and contented work environment.

Approximately 12 hours of blended learning which takes place online, allowing students to join from any time-zone and location.

• 3 x live 2-hour lectures

• Guided eLearning through Virtual Learning Environment (8 hours)

• Series of multiple-choice knowledge checks throughout course

• Practical assessment comprising of:

• 3 research assignments

• Online written examination (1 hour)

• The purpose, aims, and relevancy of maritime conventions, health and safety, and security policies

• The impact and practices of the yacht standing orders / ethical code of conduct

• The purpose, role, and responsibilities of human resources within the superyacht sector

• The crew contracts and agreements (including the SEAs and MLC policies)

• The crew qualifications, compliance, and relevant certification

• The crew files, crew administrations, and processes

• How to identify and create job descriptions and specifications for recruitment

• Effective interviewing techniques and selection process

• How to implement and manage the new crew induction process

• How to implement and regulate employee relationship management

• How to implement and manage performance management

• How to implement and manage crew training development opportunities

• How to manage and commit to crew wellbeing

• The impact of stress on mental, emotional, and physical health

At the end of the course, participants will be awarded a GUEST-accredited qualification - Unit 30. This course forms part of the Chief Steward/ess CoC route.
